Tiohtiá:ke (Montreal) was historically a gathering place for a variety of Indigenous peoples. McGill operates on this unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. By acknowledging the history of colonialism that created the structures upholding systemic discrimination and racism today we are reminded that we must remain active in educating ourselves and resisting these systems to create an environment that is equitable and inclusive to people of all backgrounds. If you would like to know how to pronounce Tiohtiá:ke or Kanien’kehá:ka, Concordia has a webpage with an audio file to show you.
